From my Facebook archives, February 10, 2015:
Pin Up Girl. 20th Century Fox, 1944. This colorful Betty Grable musical was quite a change of pace from our last film, Public Enemy. Though Betty Grable's character is rather deceitful, really.
Anyway the movie doesn't take its own story seriously. It doesn't have any plot resolution worth speaking of, and since we don't grow to care for the characters, that's fine. The film is just an excuse for big musical production numbers, several of them fun.
I particularly liked the big band swing music of Charlie Spivak and his orchestra. Hermes Pan, Fred Astaire's long-time collaborator and the dance director for this film, made an on-screen appearance to dance with Betty. That must have been why this movie was in my queue, though I had forgotten that.
Another interesting item is getting to see performances from Martha Raye as a young woman.
The final military march number was uninteresting, over-long, and out-of-place. But this was during World War 2.
