Here is an interesting article about Outrage, one of the most notable of the films directed by Ida Lupino.
By Anne Morra of The Museum of Modern Art.
Excerpt:
“As a producer and director, Lupino ran her own show; she had a director’s chair on set with “Mother” emblazoned on the back. This independence allowed her to take risks on narrative films that depicted real people in real situations, with messy lives, broken hearts, and darkened psyches. But with Lupino at the helm, these postwar American lives seemed unquestionably authentic.”
