A famous quote on classic Hollywood glamour photography is attributed to 1940s movie star and inventor Hedy Lamarr:
Just stand still and look stupid.
Later variants expanded this to "Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid." (See quoteinvestigator.com.)
Recently, I ran across some quotes from two prominent Hollywood glamour photographers who worked with Hedy Lamarr (from the 1985 book People Will Talk, by John Kobal). These top photographers' perspectives are an interesting contrast to Lamarr's.
George Hurrell in 1969, whose "pictures came to define Hollywood glamour photography, not to mention the dreams of millions of star-struck moviegoers", (according to a 1990 New York Times article):
I shot pretty much everybody I wanted, except Clara Bow, she came too early. That's one I missed; too bad, 'cause she was such a lively gal and she had so much of it. Not like Hedy [Lamarr]. I didn't get too much out of Hedy because she was so static. Stunning. But it was the nature of her, she was so phlegmatic, she didn't project anything. It was just a mood thing. And she had just one style. It didn't vary particularly.
Laszlo Willinger in 1979, who "devoted his career to taking pictures of illustrious personalities, and was recognized as one of Hollywood’s top photographers" (according to a 1989 AP obituary):
How do you make Hedy Lamarr sexy? She has nothing to give. It wasn't as simple as showing legs or cleavage. She was not very adept at posing. She was just ... She felt that if she sat there, that was enough. You try to bring it to life by changing the lighting, moving in closer to the head, whatever, because nothing changed in her face. It never occurred to me that one could wake her up... and nobody ever did.
